What is white Merlot?
White Merlot is the same as white Zinfandel, except it is made from the Merlot grape.
There was a time when pink wines were known as "rosé" wines. Now they are known as "blush" wines. As with its counterpart white Zinfandel, white Merlot derives it's color by leaving the grape juice in contact with the red skins of the grape for very little time, a matter of mere hours or sometimes days. A deep red wine has the juices in contact with the skins for weeks on end.
So, how did white Merlot come about?
It started in a region France called Languedoc, which is located Southwest of Rhňne, alongside the Mediterranean. That region does not grow the Zinfandel grape. A desire to get into the white Zinfandel market, over a decade ago Fortant Winery, of the Languedoc, invented the category of "white Merlot".
Blush wines are popular during the hot months of the year, because they are served chilled, and are drunk with white meats like fish or chicken for example, and are generally inexpensive. Thought they pale in comparison to Chardonnay which is still the lead wine seller in ther states, boasting a massive 20% of the total wine sold. But right behind is white Zinfandel, with 13% of the market. The Languedoc region of France was languishing in compaison to these, and so not to be left behind, it created its own category whichj is now knownn as "White Merlot".
Americans do not narurally have the same taste foe wine as the Europeans, although with the MacDonaldisation of the world, that will soon change. Americans drink about 58 gallons of soft drinks per capita, so we are accustomed to the sweetness, as a consequence when we make the transition to wine, we will have to be weaned from the sugar. Hence the popularity of white Zinfandel, which is usually sweet.
