It also has roots in some of the more cooler regions of California.
Malbec has many definitions it is called Auxerrois in Cahors, Côt in the Loire and or Pressac in other places, in the past this grapes popularity got struck a serious blow, in the mid 1950s in bordeaux when a severe frost destroted most of the crop, it has since then never truely regain its former glory. However, Malbec continued to be popular in Cahors where it was mixed with Merlot and Tannat to make dark, full-bodied wines, and more recently has been made into 100% malbec wines there.
Malbec is a popular wine in its native home in Argentina, vinters of this region produce less-tannic wines than that of its french counterparts. The best samples of malbec wine comes from the southern Argentine region of Mendoza.
Malbec is the premier grape of Argentina, producing some very popular varietal wines. It is now thought that the variety known as Fer in that country is a clone. As Malbec is a varital wine it is a deep red and quite intense wine, so it is also used in blending with other wines, an example of which would be, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create the renowned red French Bordeaux "claret".
The Malbec vines were transported to Argentina by a French agricultural engineer "Michel Pouget" around the 1850s, during this time there were between 40,00 and 60,00 hectares of Malbec vines planted, now there are only around 20,000. Chile, has about 6,000 hectares planted, France 5,300 hectares and California, just 45 hectares. Malbec is also grown in Australia, British Columbia and northeastern Italy.
