Grenache Red Wine

Grenache
Grenache
The name Grenache is shared by both a red and a white variety. However, as the red variety is far more popular, this entry will focus on "Garnatxa negre" or as its otherwise known Grenache Noir. The relationship can in some way be described as the same as the way Pinot blanc and Pinot noir are comprised, Grenache (pronounced gren-aash) or in spanish its Grenache this is a sweet red grape variety grown for the sole purpose of making of wine. It grows best in southern France, Spain, South America, Australia, and California's Central Valley because of the temperature of the country.
It is mostly blended with different varieties of grapes, rather than being made a varietal vintage. In the wine producing region of Priorat Known as Catalan it is been for many years blended with Carignane. In Terra Alta district, just a short distance from the Priorat, the blend is often the same but many vinters have started to blend it with other grape varieties such as Cabernet sauvignon and Syrah.
There are 2 clones of the Grenache vine. The first being the standard Grenache which is referred to as "Garnatxa Fina" in the Catalan region and the second is a far stranger clone known as "Hairy Grenache". It is well known in Catalonia as "Garnatxa Peluda" or "Lledoner Pelut". Its leaves look similar to the Macabeo grape, but with fine hairs covering it. Recent studies into this bizarre clone indicates that is produces smaller thicker skinned berries and definitely makes it a superior clone.
Grenache grape varieties are used in vineyards throughout Australia, used partly to make varietal wines, but are often in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Syrah and Mourvèdre in so called GSM wines.
