Engraving is the art of stenciling a patern or design onto a hard, flat surface, by cutting grooves into the chosen object. A custom engraved item could be a decorated object in itself, as when wood, silver, gold or stainless steel are engraved.
Engraving was a historically important method of creating pictures on paper, both in artistic printing and commercial reproductions as well as illustrations for books or magazines. It has been long replaced by photography or digital scanning in its commercial applications and partly because of the dwindling amount of engravers who possess the old school technique of such art work.
Engraving is much less common in printmaking, etching and other techniques have taken over as they are easier to learn and dont cost as much for supplies. Other terms often used for engravings are copper-plate engraving, custom engraving, glass engraving and Line engraving.
