Whisky Sour

Whiskey Sour
Sours are short drinks, flavoured with lemon or lime juice. They can be made with almost any spirit, although Whiskey Sour was the original and, for many, is still the favourite.

serves 7

4-6 cracked ice cubes 2 measures American blended whiskey
1 measure lemon juice
1 tsp sugar syrup
To decorate

cocktail cherry
slice of orange
Put the cracked ice into a cocktail shaker.
Pour the whiskey, lemon juice and sugar syrup over the ice.
Shake vigorously until a frost forms.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and decorate with the cherry and orange slice.

Variations

Bourbon Sour: substitute bourbon for the whiskey and decorate with an orange slice.

Brandy Sour: substitute 2 measures brandy for the blended whiskey.

Boston Sour: add 1 egg white to the ingredients and decorate with a cocktail cherry and a slice of lemon.

Polynesian Sour: put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures white rum, 1/2 measure lemon juice, 1/2 measure orange juice and '/2 measure guava juice over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Decorate with a slice of orange.

Fireman's Sour: put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures white rum, 1 l-i measures lime juice, 1 tablespoon grenadine and 1 teaspoon sugar syrup over the ice. Shake until a frost forms. Strain into a cocktail glass and decorate with a cocktail cherry and a slice of lemon.

Strega Sour: put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures gin, 1 measure Strega and 1 measure lemon juice over the ice. Shake vigorousK until a frost forms. Strain into a cocktail glass and decorate with a slice of lemon.

Double Standard Sour: put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 1+'/2. measures blended American whiskey, 1+1/2. measures gin, 1 measure lemon juice, 1 teaspoon grenadine and 1 teaspoon sugar syrup over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and decorate with a cocktail cherry and a slice of orange.
