Salty Dog
Salty Dog
This is another cocktail that has changed since its invention. When it first appeared, gin-based cocktails were by far the most popular, but nowadays, a Salty Dog is more frequently made with vodka. You can use either spirit, but the cocktails will have different flavours.
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tbsp coarse salt
lime wedge 6-8 cracked ice cubes
2 measures vodka grapefruit juice, to top up
Mix the sugar and salt in a saucer. Rub the rim of a chilled Collins glass with the lime wedge, then dip it in the sugar and salt mixture to frost. Fill the glass with cracked ice cubes and pour the vodka over them. Top up with grapefruit juice and stir to mix. Serve with a straw.
Variations
Bride's Mother:
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures sloe gin, 1 measure gin, 2 measures grapefruit juice and '/2 measure sugar syrup over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
A.J:
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures applejack or apple brandy, and 1 measure grapefruit juice over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Midnight Sun:
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures aquavit, 1 measure grapefruit juice and 'A teaspoon grenadine over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Decorate with a slice of orange.
Blinker:
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures rye whiskey, 2'A measures grapefruit juice and 1 teaspoon grenadine over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Woodward:
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures Scotch whisky, 'A measure dry vermouth and 'A measure grapefruit juice over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
