Classic Cocktails
French 75
French 75
Although this cocktail was described in a cocktails book written in the early twentieth century as something that 'definitely hits the spot', there seems to be some confusion about the actual ingredients. All recipes include champagne, but disagree about the spirits included.
4-6 cracked ice cubes
2 measures brandy
1 measure lemon juice
1 tbsp sugar syrup
chilled champagne, to top up
twist of lemon peel, to decorate
Put the cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour the brandy, lemon juice and sugar syrup over the ice and shake vigorously until a frost forms. Strain into a chilled highball glass and top up with champagne. Decorate with the lemon twist.
French 75 (second version):
put 4-6 cracked ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures Plymouth gin and 1 measure lime juice over the ice and shake vigorously until a frost forms. Strain into a chilled wine glass and top up with chilled champagne. Decorate with a cocktail cherry.
French 75 (third version):
put 1 teaspoon caster sugar into a tall, chilled tumbler. Add 1 measure lemon juice and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Fill the glass with cracked ice cubes. Pour 2 measures gin over the ice and top up with chilled champagne. Decorate with slices of orange and cocktail cherries.
London French 75:
make the second version of a French 75, but substitute London gin for the Plymouth gin and lemon juice for the lime.
French Kiss:
put 4-6 ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour 2 measures bourbo^ 1 measure apricot liqueur, 2 teaspoons grenadine and 1 teaspoon lemon juice over the ice. Shake vigorously until a frost forms, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
French Rose:
put 4-6 ice cubes into a mixing glass. Pour 2 measures gin, 1 measure cherry brandy and 1 measure dry vermouth over the ice. Stir well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
