Chianti Red Wine

Chianti
Chianti
Chianti is the most famous of Italy's red wine. It was at one stage identifiable by the straw basket case which enclosed the bottle, this was called fiasco or "flask".
Up until the end of the 18th century Chianti was based solely on Sangiovese grapes. By the turn of the 20th century chianti vinters started to add several other grape varieties, some chianti's even had 5 to 10% white grape varieties.
From the latter half of the century, somewhere around the 1960s it was again allowed to produce a Chianti with 100% sangiovese.
Chianti produce that meets the most stringent requirements when being fermented, are labelled Chianti Superiore. The fine Chianti blend "Classico" which meets most of the guidelines, is still not allowed in any case to be labelled as "Superiore".
Chianti is one of Tuscany's few wines than can be classed as "traditional" wine, the others of this class are new wines, based on the sangiovese and some popular French grapes that are called "Super Tuscans".
