Beaujolais Wine
This wine is French in origin and is generally made of the Gamay grape. Beaujolais wines from this particular region make up a very small fraction of wine made here. Only about 1% are made with the Beaujolais grape which is also known by its full title - Gamay Noir a'Jus Blanc. Beaujolais has a reputation for being a very light-bodied red wine, with high acidity levels, therefore it would not be a wine that you would drink on a regular basis.
When selecting a Beaujolais you need to be carefull. It needs to be poured within the first 3 years of its life in order to insure good quality as it takes a special vinter to make a Beaujolais that would last longer. In fact only the best quality Beaujolais can be matured to 10 years or so.
Wine bottles labeled Beaujolais account for 50% of the total amount of Beaujolais wine produced. The Villages in the Beaujolais areas make a quarter of the region's total wine production. The best beaujolais wine comes from vineyard sites in the ten "crus" in the north of the region.
Wine from these individual crus, which make up for the rest of the percentage, can be more full-bodied, darker in color, and significantly longer-lived. For the novice wine drinker among us we unfortunately have a problem, the word "Beaujolais" is not always shown on the label, so unless you know your wine there can be little done except to keep a list handy.
