The Art of Glasses
Appearance is as important as taste when you are serving cocktails. Imaginative mixed drinks demand the appropriate glasses to enhance the flavor of the contents visually. Do not worry, though. You do not have to go out and buy all the glasses shown here.
I suggest you start out with the glasses you already have and then slowly build up your stock as you discover which style of cocktail you make the most often. As a rule of thumb, six to eight different types of glass are adequate for a small home bar. But first, a word about caring for your glassware.
Always wash your glasses immediately after use, especially if you have used cream, milk, or eggs in the drinks. Also, take the time to wash your glasses separately from dishes and pots and pans in warm, soapy water.
Then rinse them in clean, hot running water, so all traces of grease are removed. Gently dry the glasses with a clean linen dishtowel. Here is a summary of the most common bar glasses. As you will see, your requirements will be determined by the cocktails you and your friends enjoy the most.
